Obituary

Chenoa: Arthur R. Johnson, 99, formerly of Chenoa, died Tuesday, April 29, 2008 at his residence in Evergreen Estates, Cedar Rapids, IA.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 pm, Friday, May 2, 2008 at Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Chenoa. His funeral service will be 10:30 am, Saturday, May 3, 2008 at the Presbyterian Church of Chenoa with Pastor Dan Patterson officiating. Burial will follow in Chenoa Cemetery, Chenoa.

Arthur was born near Milan, Mo on March 4, 1909 a son to Thomas Henry Everett and Mary Jane Shatto Johnson. He was the middle of three sons. Arthur lived near Humpherys, MO while growing up and going to school and graduating from Humpherys High School in 1929.

In 1935 he and Phyllis Mildred Watson were married. To that union three children were born: Peggy Myers, Swisher, IA, Robert (Linda) Johnson, North Port, FL, and James Johnson (Deceased). He is also survived by 8 grandchildren: Cindy Valenciano, Sandy Erschen, Julie Dvorak, Robert L. Johnson, Barbara Schulte, Sharon Paulsen, Timothy Johnson, and Dianna Lynn Johnson Morris; 15 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Arthur graduated from Northeast State Teacher College, now Truman College in Kirkville, MO in 1934 and taught school for two years in Missouri before going on to Iowa State University in Ames, IA. He graduated with a Vocational Agriculture Degree. He remained in Missouri a few more years and afterwards moved to Illinois to teach. There he taught for about 30 years in Colusa, Annawan, Elizabeth and Chenoa before retiring in1972 in Chenoa, Illinois. In 1945 he started vocational agriculture night classes for returned veterans of WWII. He took a team of Chenoa high school students to the National Dairy Judging Contest where they placed 1st.

He was preceded in death by his wife of almost 66 years in 2001, one son James, brothers Kirk and Carl, one great granddaughter, Ashley Dvorak and a son-in-law John Myers.

Arthur and Phyllis enjoyed traveling after he retired. He enjoyed playing golf, reading and watching sports on TV. He was a great husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be missed by his family.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials be directed to the Presbyterian Church of Chenoa.
