Obituary

Barbara A. Dowell, 75, passed away quietly at 3:15am Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at her home in Colfax, Illinois after a 10 year battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Barbara was born on November 22, 1933 in Prophetstown, Illinois; daughter of Ross (Harold) and Lucille Stage Packer; and grew up in the Quad Cities area. Barbara married Eugene O'Connell September 1952 who fathered her 3 daughters. Barbara later married Ronald Dowell on April 17, 1970 before moving to Colfax in 1979.

Barbara is survived by her loving husband Ronald, 2 daughters; Debra O'Connell (Bloomington, Illinois), Dawn O'Connell (Warrenville, Illinois), 2 sons; Dennis (Eva) Dowell (Mundelein, Illinois), Ryan (Beth) Dowell (Bloomington, Illinois), a son-law, Craig Cozza (Tacoma. WA), 6 grandchildren; Michelle (Rob Ditchen), Heather Moebus, Marc Cozza, Shana Cozza, Cassandra Dowell and Corey Dowell; 2 great-grand-daughters; Carley and Elysia; 1 sister, Marilyn Waite (Prophetstown) and 2 brothers; Harold Packer Jr. (Sterling, Illinois) and Doug Packer (Geneseo, Illinois) and numerous nieces and nephews.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; Ross and Lucille Packer, a brother; Donald Packer and a daughter; Karen Cozza.

Barbara devoted her life to her family, her students and the community. She touched the lives of many children throughout her life as a room mother, Girl Scout leader, PTO officer, school secretary, 4-H Mom, school volunteer for both her children and grandchildren, Ridgeview Booster Club Officer and a Teacher Aide for learning disabled students in the Ridgeview School District.

Barbara helped form the Octavia Park District and was the first park district commissioner. She held that position for 10 years and devoted her time to the restoration of the community swimming pool and installing a walking path. A gazebo was built in the park in her honor for her dedication to the community.

Visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00 pm Friday, July 17, 2009 at Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Colfax with a celebration of Barbara's life following at 7:00pm. Visitation will also be from noon to 1:00pm Saturday, July 18, 2009 at Gibson Funeral Home, Erie with interment following at Erie Cemetery, Erie, IL.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Alzheimer's Association; the Octavia Park District or to the charity of the donor's choice.
