Obituary for Danton Francis “Dan” MulcaheyDanton Francis “Dan” Mulcahey, 78, of Colfax, Illinois, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2026, at Carle BroMenn Hospital in Bloomington, IL, following a courageous two-year battle with stage four prostate cancer.

Life and Career: Dan was born on November 22, 1947, in Bloomington, IL, to Mary Rita (Ryan) and John Patrick Mulcahey. Growing up in Colfax, he learned the value of hard work early on, working alongside Bud Lee to build homes throughout the local area and assisting his father in building their family home on Center Street in Colfax - a property Dan proudly owned and maintained throughout his life.

After graduating from Octavia High School in 1965, Dan attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he became a lifetime member of the Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Finance in 1970. That same year, Dan answered the call to service and was drafted into the United States Army, serving honorably from March 3, 1970 to November 3, 1971. An honor graduate of the Chaparral Missile Mechanic School, he also served as an instructor for the Chaparral System Training Course (electronics-mechanics). He attained the rank of Specialist 5th Class and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Expert Rifle Marksmanship Badge, and the Good Conduct Medal. Upon completing his military service, he returned to the University of Illinois to earn his Master’s of Science Degree in Accounting.

Dan built a distinguished career as an accountant in corporate finance, beginning with Price Waterhouse and later joining Kimberly-Clark. His profession took him all across the United States and included a memorable three-year assignment living and working in Beijing, China.

Following his retirement from Kimberly-Clark, Dan returned to his roots in Colfax, where he continued his deep commitment to the community. A proud 53-year member of the Davis-Kerber Post #653 of the American Legion, he honorably served as the post's financial officer for many years.

Family and Community: For more than 35 years, Dan shared his life and home in Colfax with his beloved partner, Sallie Heidrich. He was an integral and foundational part of Sallie’s family, fully embracing and dedicating himself to the lives of her parents, children, and grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense pride and joy.

Survivors and Preceded Loved Ones: Dan is survived by his devoted partner, Sallie Heidrich; his niece, Anne Reihard; Sallie's children; and their cherished grandchildren. He also leaves behind many beloved cousins and lifelong friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his infant brother, Daniel; his sister, Judy Reihard, and brother-in-law, Harold Reihard; his double first cousins, Mary Ann and David; grandson, Robert Dale Becker; as well as Sallie’s parents, Hartzell and Mary Ruth Henline.

• Graveside Service: Thursday, August 6, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Wiley Cemetery (IL-165, Colfax, IL 61728).

• Celebration of Life: Immediately following the graveside service at the Davis-Kerber Post #653 - Colfax American Legion (103 E Main Street, Colfax, IL 61728).

In lieu of flowers or gifts, memorial donations in Dan’s honor may be made to the Colfax American Legion or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
