Devona Constance (Dann) Kalas, 85, of Chenoa formerly of Kalamazoo, MI and Chicago passed away at 9:20 am, Monday, August 31, 2009 at Meadows Mennonite Retirement Community, Chenoa, IL.
Cremation rites have been accorded with a memorial service to be scheduled at a later date in Michigan. Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Chenoa has charge of arrangements.
Devona was born June 24, 1924 in Kalamazoo, MI the daughter of Charles Oscar and Mina Evelyn (Wilde) Dann. She married George James Kalas on June 21, 1947 in Chicago. He passed away February 23, 2000.
Survivors include; four daughters, Vicki (Bob) King, Towanda, Jody (Harry Tram) Blatchford, Chicago, Marti (Bob) Bitzky, Florence, SC, Connie (Kevin) Shelton, Plainfield; one sister, Laura Jacobs, Kalamazoo, MI; nine grandchildren, Carolyn Bolsinger, Matthew King, Jesse & Jennifer Sandoval, Michael, Robin & Karl Bitzky, Samuel & Renata Shelton; several nieces, nephews and extended family members also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister; Virginia Root and two brothers; Kenneth and James Dann
The family suggests that memorials be made to Alzheimer's Association or Parchment United Methodist Church, 225 Glendale Bld., Parchment, MI 49004.
Devona was a 1942 graduate of Kalamazoo H.S. and a 1945 graduate of Cook County School of Nursing. She was a Registered Nurse in the Chicago area for many years, a member of Parchment United Methodist Church, Parchment, MI. Her hobbies included sewing, quilting and gardening. Although her Alzheimer's disease had progressed too far for her to understand that her beloved church was severely damaged in a fire, she would be happy knowing that memorials in her memory were helping to rebuild her church.
