Fairbury – Elsie Schaffer, 100, of Fairbury, passed away at 10:30 am, August 9, 2026, in Fairbury.

Her funeral will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, August 14, 2026, at Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Fairbury. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, Fairbury.

Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 pm, Thursday, August 13, 2026, also at the funeral home and 9-10:00 am on Friday, before the services.

Memorials may be made to Fairbury Boys and Girls Club or SELCAS.

Elsie was born February 8, 1926, in Fairbury, the daughter of Ben and Hilda Abts Metz. She married Richard Schaffer on November 29, 1952. He survives.

Also surviving are her children, Elaine Popejoy of Ellsworth and Paul (Joanne) Schaffer of Richardson, TX; sister-in-law, Peggy Metz of Peoria; grandchildren, John (Brenda) Popejoy of Farmer City, Jaime (Craig) Cook of Fernandina Beach, FL, Perry (Austin) Nix of Garland, TX, Allie Schaffer of Richardson, TX; great-grandchildren, Axel and Lexi Popejoy, Londyn and Ryker Cook, and Levi and Jack Nix.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings, Pauline Miller, Kenneth Metz, Merle Metz, Melvin Metz, and Donna Seifert and son-in-law, Paul Popejoy.

Elsie was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Fairbury.

Elsie enjoyed walking with her women’s group, riding her bicycle and getting lost in a good book. She was also a talented quilter, spending countless hours at the full-size quilt frame in her basement, carefully stitching quilts for each of her grandchildren.
