Frank J. Merrill, 82, of Naperville, died January 31, 2007 at 12:00PM at Edward Hospital and Health Services in Naperville.
Visitation will be held on Friday, February 2, 2007 from 4-7:00PM at Duffy-Pils Memorial Home in Fairbury. Funeral will be held on Saturday, February 3, 2007 at 11:00 am also at the funeral home. Rev. Bill Bryan will be officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, Fairbury. Memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church in Naperville.
Frank was born May 6, 1924 in Fairbury the son of Frank Benjamin and Hazel Philena Johnson Merrill. They preceded him in death. He married (Gloria) Joan Kelson on October 3, 1959 in Chicago. She survives.
Also surviving are his children, Linda (John) Kennan of Midland, MI, Frank B. (Sandra) Merrill of Warrensburg, MO, Jean (David) Nippa of Dublin, OH, Marla (Carl) Garrison of Naperville; Grandchildren, Meryl Garrison, David Kennan, James Kennan, Jessica Nippa, Jennifer Nippa, James Nippa, and Joy Nippa; one sister Mary Jewel Eliason of Shelby Twp., MI.
He was preceded in death by one brother Don P. Merrill.
Frank graduated from Illinois Wesleyn with a Bachelor of Science degree and then obtained a law degree from University of Illinois. After graduating he was a very successful civil trial lawyer with George F. Barrett Law Firm. He then started his own private practice Frank J. Merrill Attorney at Lawn in Oakbrook and retired from his private practice in Naperville. He was a member of the Dupage County, Illinois State, and the American Bar Associations.
He is a veteran of the United States Navy. He served during WWII on the USS Ticonderoga in the South Pacific which was engaged in many battles.
He was a life member of the VFW. He was the first commander of the VFW in Fairbury in Illinois after WWII.
Frank was an avid horseman who owned, trained, bred, and drove Harness Race Horses throughout Illinois and the Midwest.
He is also an avid lover of nature and the outdoors. He enjoyed bird watching, hunting, and fishing. He was a member of many nature societies.
