Fairbury – George William Fyke, 88, of Fairbury, passed away at 10:41pm, August 31, 2014 at his residence.
Cremation has been accorded.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00am, Friday, September 5, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church of Fairbury. Pastor Spencer Homan will be officiating.
Friends may greet the family from 4-7:00pm, Thursday, September 4, 2014 also at the church.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Fairbury, SELCAS, Help Me See, and Feeding America.
George was born April 12, 1926 in Iuka, the son of George Wesley and Lulu Blanche Rogers Fyke.
He first married Donna Camel on August 22, 1954. She died September 21, 2001. He then married Phyllis Kilgus Nussbaum on May 29, 2005. She survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Karen (Bill) Curtiss of Acworth, GA and Nancy (Steve) Artz of Indianapolis, IN; step-children, Robert (Anne) Nussbaum of Fairbury, Greg (Patryce) Nussbaum of Bloomington, Deanna (Regis) Canonge of Paris, France; grandchildren, Mandi (Scott) Cullifer, Kristi (Jake) VanEpps, Sara (Jeff) Triffo, Katie Redman, Keith Artz, Rob (Brittany) Artz, and Beth Artz; step-grandchildren, Jennifer (Jason) Stuckey, Susan (Matthew) Starr, Emma, Melissa, Rebecca, and Grant Nussbaum; nine great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Martha Sheftick and one step-brother, Gene Berthold.
George graduated from Milikin University. During that time he played on the 1951 basketball team that placed 2nd in The National Association of Intercollegiate Basketball Tournament. This team was later inducted into the Illinois Basketball Hall of Fame.
George was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He served during the Korean Conflict in Okinawa.
He taught Science and Physical Education at Fairbury-Cropsey High School and Prairie Central High School. He also was the ICE Director, Athletic Director, football announcer, girls and boys basketball coach, football coach, and golf coach. He also was the manager and
swimming instructor at the Fairbury Pool.
George was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Fairbury, Lions Club and Masons of Fairbury. He volunteered with Meals on Wheels and worked on seven Habitat for Humanity Homes.
George was an avid golfer and pool player. He also enjoyed being a Winter Texan and a Florida Snowbird.
