Obituary

George S. Myers, 88, Fairbury died at 1:20 am Thursday, July 3, 2014 at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church, Fairbury with Pastor Floyd Blackard officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, Fairbury with full military rites conducted by the Fairbury VFW and American Legion posts.

Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 pm Monday, July 7, 2014 at Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Fairbury and 9:30 to 10:15 am Tuesday at the church. An I.O.O.F. service will be held at 7:45 pm Monday at the memorial home.

Mr. Myers was born April 25, 1926 in Leitchfield, KY the son of Ollie B. and Nona Jewel White Myers Sr. He married JoAnne Thompson on March 14, 1948 in Fairbury, IL. She survives in Fairbury.

Also surviving are three children, Georgia (Clark) Wilkinson, Camargo, IL, Gregory (Susan) Myers and Jeffrey Myers, both of Fairbury, IL, five grandchildren, Amber (Tony) Stenger, Groveland, IL, Derek (Annie) Wilkinson, Naperville, IL, Nathan (Kristy) Myers, Terre Haute, IN, Jason (Jennifer) Myers, Cary, IL, and Ryan (Tiffany) Myers, Fairbury, IL, three great grandchildren, Sean Stenger, Nicholas Wilkinson, and Holden Myers.

He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ollie B. Myers Jr.

George served in the US Army and in 1947 was stationed in Japan with the 43rd Engineer Construction Battalion.

George graduated from Fairbury-Cropsey High School in 1944. His passion was farming, and he and JoAnne farmed south of Fairbury for many years raising crops and milking cows. In his early farming career, he was named "Outstanding Young Farmer" by the Fairbury Junior Chamber of Commerce (1957). He was a 4-H leader for eleven years and a member of I.O.O. F. Lodge #290, Fairbury and the American Legion Post #9789.

A member of the First United Methodist Church of Fairbury, George served on several committees and volunteered to assist where needed.

George loved his family dearly, both immediate and extended. In addition, he enjoyed visiting with his many friends. His 1944 High School yearbook stated "a merry gentleman with a ready smile". He always had that smile.

The family suggests memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church, Fairbury, IL; Fairview Haven Retirement Community, Fairbury, IL or a charity of the donor's choice.
