Harlan R. Spencer 82, of Cooksville, died July 25, 2007 at 12:55PM at Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 29, 2007 from 4-7:00PM at Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Colfax. Funeral will be held on Monday, July 30, 2007 at 10:00AM also at the funeral home. Pastor Wendell Wardell will be officiating. Burial will be in Blue Mound Cemetery, Cooksville. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association or Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy.
Harlan was born October 18, 1924 in Cooksville a son of Edward and Zora Pitzer Spencer. They preceded him in death. He married Helen Bernadine Beier on December 30, 1945 in Bloomington. She survives. Also surviving are his children Larry (Cindy) Spencer of Sholow, AZ, Terry (Ann) Spencer of Cooksville, and Diana (Jerry Alvey) of Bloomington; his grandchildren, Shelley Spencer, Brad (Eileen) Spencer, Greg (Dawn) Spencer, and Tara (Pat) Hurley and five great grandchildren. Harlan was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Harlan joined his brother in 1949 to operate Spencer Brothers now Spencer Oil in Cooksville.
He was a Veteran of the United States Marine Corp. He enlisted on October 16, 1942 and was discharged on November 3, 1945. He served during WWII and received a Purple Heart.
He was a member of the American Legion-Davis-Kerber Post #653, Colfax, Elks Lodge and VFW in Bloomington. Harlan also was a volunteer fireman for the Cooksville Fire Department.
