Chenoa: Rev. James W. Underwood, 80, of Chenoa, died at 5:26 am, Sunday, February 10, 2008 at Meadows Mennonite Retirement Home, Meadows, IL.
Cremation rites have been accorded with a private family graveside inurnment to be held at a later date in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Chenoa has charge of arrangements.
Rev. Underwood was born November 13, 1927 in Kalamazoo, MI, a son to James and Rhea (Eberly) Underwood. He married Gertrude Toppen on August 23, 1975 in Grand Rapids, MI. She Survives in Chenoa.
Also surviving are two children; Scott and Julie Underwood both of Michigan, four step children; Richard Freeman, North Bend, WA, Kathy Hill, Santee, CA, Dr. Thomas Freeman, Winston Salem, NC, Sue Chambers, Overland Park, KS, one sister; Suzanne TenHoeve, Holland, MI.
He was preceded in death by both parents and one step-son Jay Freeman.
He served in the United States Navy during WWII as a Seaman 1st Class from July 17, 1945 to July 20, 1946. He received his education and training from Wheaton College, Wheaton, IL, Western Theological Seminary, Holland, MI, and University of Dubuque Theological Seminary, Dubuque, IA.
Reverend Underwood served as Pastor of Oak Grove and Brady center EUB Churches, Oakley, MI, South Whiteford EUB Church, Lambrtville, MI, Monroe Calvary EUB Church, Monroe, MI, Eastmont Reformed Church, Grand Rapids, MI, Golden Congregational Church, Ryan, IA, United Presbyterian Church, Woodhull, IL, Hemenway Memorial Presbyterian, Boonville, IN, and the 1st Presbyterian Church of Chenoa, from 1986-1991.
The family suggests that memorials be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital.
