Obituary

James Henry Winter, 89, Fairbury died at 1:50 am Monday, January 5, 2009, at BroMenn Regional Medical Center, Normal.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, January 10, 2009, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Colfax with the Rev. Connie Frase officiating. Inurnment will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery, Colfax with full military rites accorded by the Fairbury VFW post #9789 and the John Joda American Legion post #54. Visitation will be 10:00 to 10:45 am Saturday at the church. Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Fairbury is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be given to the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Colfax; Fairview Haven Nursing Home or the VFW Post 9789, both of Fairbury.

Mr. Winter was born September 19, 1919 in Alexandria, South Dakota the son of Henry and Lula Franks Winter. He married Eleanor Crone on January 15, 1949. She died August 7, 2008.

Surviving are one son, Robert (Marcia) Winter, Taylor Ridge; one daughter, Anita (Curtis) Addicks, Bloomington; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Butcher, Dousman, WI and one brother, Delmar Winter, Sibley.

He is preceded in death by one sister.

Mr. Winter was a 1938 graduate of Sibley High School. On May 26, 1942 he enlisted in the United States Army. He served in the Pacific Theatre and fought in the Mariana Islands. James trained as a bomb disposal technician and obtained the rank of Technical Sergeant. He was honorably discharged on November 16, 1945. After WWII, James returned to Illinois and farmed near Sibley and Colfax. He retired in 1984 and moved to Fairbury in 1989.

James was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Colfax, the VFW Post #9789, Fairbury.
