Chenoa, John William Streid, 88,
of Chenoa, passed away at 1:42am, Saturday, June 11, 2011 at Advocate BroMenn Regional Medical Center, Normal.
His funeral will be at 11:00am on Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Chenoa with visitation one hour prior.
Burial will be in Chenoa Cemetery, Chenoa where military honors will be performed by the Chenoa VFW and American Legion.
Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Chenoa is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Chenoa or Chenoa Fire Department.
John was born May 27, 1923 in rural Chenoa the son of Daniel and Grace Conger Streid.
He married Marilyn J. Schultz on January 26, 1946 in Chenoa. She died December 20, 2000.
Surviving are three daughters; Martha (Charles) Kylander of Baton Rouge, LA, Elizabeth (Edward) Easley of Ivoryton, CT, and Jacqueline Streid of Darien; one son John Thomas (Cindy) Streid of Chenoa; grandchildren, Jason and Nathan Kylander, Chad (Valerie) and Seth Easley, and Sarah, Kelsey and Andy Streid.
John was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Ruby Morrison and Buelah Koerner; one brother, Delmar Streid; one daughter, Nancy Streid; and one daughter-in-law Carrie Streid.
John was a lifelong farmer in the Chenoa area.
He is a veteran of the United States Air Force where he flew 20 sorties as an armorer gunner aboard a B-24 stationed in Italy. He operated tail turret and fired with 50 caliber machine guns, made emergency repairs to guns while in flight, and serviced and maintained turrets, guns, and bomb racks while on ground. John was in the service for 35 months.
John also was an active member of
St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Chenoa. He was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge in Pontiac, American Legion and VFW in Chenoa, and was a board member of Meadows Coop Elevator.
John was an avid Cubs fan since he was a child. He was known to be such a fan that you could find him listening to the games on a transistor radio while working the fields in his tractor.
He loved golf and following his grandchildren in all their activities.
