Jon W. Goembel, 87, Fairbury, died at 8:00 pm Sunday, July 12, 2026 at the Gibson Community Hospital Annex, Gibson City, IL.

A private graveside service will be held at Strawn Cemetery with full military rites accorded by the Fairbury VFW and American Legion posts. Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Fairbury is in charge of arrangements.

A Celebration of Jon’s life will be announced at a later date. The family suggests memorials be given to SELCAS.

Jon was born March 13, 1939 in Fairbury, IL the son of Horace William and Viola Munz Goembel.

Survivors include a special companion, Karen Johnson and her son, Coty Johnson, one brother, Rick (Sally) Goembel, Fairbury, 2 sisters, Marilyn Vogt Downey, Brooklyn, NY, Marsha Graham, Rialto, CA, 3 nephews, Justin (Melissa) Goembel, Keith (Sarah) Goembel, Michael Graham, 2 nieces, Erika Vogt Fuller, Sheila (Etienne) Muller and many great nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by an infant sister, Julia Ann Goembel and brothers-in-law, Stephen Graham and Nicolas Downey.

Jon was a graduate of Fairbury-Cropsey High School who served in the US Army from 1/29/1962 until 7/31/1963. After the service Jon farmed in Belle Prairie Township and was a dairy man for many years. He served on the Fairbury rural fire district and was on the Livingston County Board for 14 years. He was an active member of the NRA and ISRA.
