Joseph W. Sommer Jr., 88 of Chenoa, died at 10:40 PM, Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at Advocate BroMenn Regional Medical Center, Normal.
His funeral service will be held at 10am, Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at the Meadows Mennonite Retirement Community Chapel in Meadows with Pastor Jane Roeschley officiating. Burial will follow in Chenoa Cemetery, Chenoa.
Visitation will be one hour prior to his service on Tuesday morning also at Meadows Mennonite Retirement Community Chapel. Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Chenoa is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be directed to the Mennonite Central Committee or Camp Friedenswald, Michigan.
Mr. Sommer was born June 27, 1926 in Meadows, the son of Joseph W. and Lula (Salzman) Sommer Sr. He married Mildred Arlene Grider on August 1, 1948 in Oxford, IN. She survives in Chenoa. His parents preceded him in death.
Other survivors include two sons, Roger (Sheila) Sommer of Chenoa and Tim Sommer of Peoria; four grandchildren, Strider Sommer, Shannon Affeldt, Seaver Sommer and Stirling Sommer and 3 great grandchildren.
Joseph was a 1944 graduate of Chenoa High School. In 1952 he did Volunteer Service work in Topeka, KS. He served on the Board of Directors for IAA, FS, McLean County Farm Bureau, Chenoa High School, and Camp Friendswald in Michigan. Joe loved farming and was a life-long farmer in Livingston County. Although he loved farming, his greatest love was his family who will miss him deeply.
