Leland Schone Rolf, age 90, died peacefully in Montgomery, AL on Saturday July 21, 2007 after a valiant battle with bone cancer. He was born in Arcadia, IL May 8, 1917 to Frank and Marie (Schone) Rolf. Brothers Frank and Harold and Sister Betty Henderson preceded him in death. He married Marcella "Marcie" Trvdik at Wright Field Air Force Base, OH on May 13, 1944. She survives. Also surviving are five children: Leland Rolf Jr., Winter Haven, FL, Cheryl Rolf, Northport, AL, Scott (Beth) Rolf, Fairbury, IL, Robin Rolf and Pam Rolf both of Bloomington, IL. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Tamela Miller, Tonya Dalton, Brad Miller, Leslie Rolf, Scott Rolf and eight great grandchildren.
Leland graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in Agricultural Business and was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. As a farm boy in central Illinois he was fascinated by airplanes and after graduation from U of I he enlisted in the Air Force in 1941. He was a B-17 pilot and flew 50 missions in WWII. Later he was a test pilot for the Air Force. He worked at Swift and Co. in Chicago and then moved to Fairbury to work at Honegger's. He later was a real estate agent for J.C. Ebach Reality, Fairbury. Mr. Rolf then moved to Montgomery, AL where he owned and operated Rolf's Office Supply until his retirement. He was a charter member of the Lions Club which became the focus of his community service for a lifetime.
He remained a devoted member of the Lutheran Church and participated in several men's prayer groups. He was active in initiating the STEP and Citizen's Against Government Waste programs. He was also an active AGR alumni.
He and Marcie danced beautifully throughout their lives and not wanting to lose his zest for life he participated in their line dance group just one month before his death.
Memorials in his honor can be made to the local Lions Club. A Memorial service will be held 2:00 pm Sunday, July 29, 2007 at the Lutheran Church of the Epiphany on South Blvd in Montgomery, AL.
