Fairbury: Lewis E. Walters, 82, Fairbury died 12:15 am Wednesday, August 23, 2006 at Heritage Manor, Colfax.
Funeral services will be 10:30 am Friday, August 25, 2006 at the First Baptist Church of Fairbury with Pastor Steve Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Strawn Cemetery, Strawn, IL with full military rites accorded by the Fairbury American Legion and V.F.W.
Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 pm Thursday, August 24, 2006 at Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Fairbury and 9:30 to 10:15 am Friday at the church.
Mr. Walters was born July 21, 1924 in Strawn, IL. The son of Anthony and Ruby (Cox) Walters. He married Edna Atteberry on July 12, 1947 in Gibson City. She Survives in Fairbury.
Also surviving are 4 children: Michael (Debra) Walters, Valparaiso, IN ; Patrick Walters, Indianapolis, IN; Theresa (Gary) Granata, St. John, IN; Sharon (Tracy) Knight, Macomb, IL. One sister Mary (Buck) Morris, Fairbury and 4 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by 2 brothers and 1 sister.
Mr. Walters served in the US Marine Corps from 09/10/1942 to 09/21/1945. He served in Battles at Bouganville, Guam, Guada Canal and Iwo Jima.
After the war he was employed as a truck driver for Consolidated Freightway, driving accident free for over a million miles. He retired in the fall of 1985.
Lewis was a member of the Fairbury Fair Board, Past Commander of John Joda American Legion Post #54, Odd Fellows Lodge, Rebekahs Charity Home 112, Past President of Arrowhead Lodge, Fairbury, 40 and 8 Club, Fairbury VFW Post #9789. His hobbies included antiquing, fishing, gardening & coin collecting.
In lieu of flowers the family suggest's memorials be given to the First Baptist Church of Fairbury Memorial Fund or Dominy Memorial Library, Building fund.
