Colfax – Loren A. "Colonel" Powell, 86, of Colfax, passed away at 4:25pm, November 1, 2024, at OSF St. James-John Albrecht Medical Center, Pontiac, surrounded by his loving family.
Cremation has been accorded. When the "toasted" has cooled, a celebration of life will be from 12-3:00pm, November 23, 2024, at Cooksville Fire Station. SAMS Marcia Buchs will have a few words at 12:00pm. There will be food provided at the fire station. Family has requested casual dress.
Memorials may be made to the McLean County Animal Shelter or Ridgeview Food Pantry.
Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Colfax is in charge of arrangements.
Loren and his twin sister Lorene were born to Byron "Chuck" and Vada (Popejoy) Powell on June 30, 1938, in Colfax.
Loren graduated from Lexington High School in 1956. He received the FFA St. Farmer Degree.
Loren married the love of his life Betty on November 8, 1958, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Colfax. He later was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel.
Loren sold livestock, feed, and equipment for Honnegers and Co., Fairbury, Faultless Milling and Hubbard Milling Co. for 22 years. He sold Funks "G" Hybrids for 25 years. He last worked for Anchor Grain Co. Loren was a licensed Life and Health Insurance Agent and Real Estate Agent for 32 years. During those 32 years he was also an auctioneer. He performed many benefit auctions. After a successful auction he always felt good because he knew he had helped a family in need. Loren also was very active with the Jaycees and a leader with the 4-H and Cub Scouts.
Loren is survived by his wife Betty; brother, Larry of Tipton, IA; children, Kathy (Stan) Mercer of Urbana and Kevin (Karen) of Colfax; grandchildren, Derek (Jessi) Powell, Bryce (Demi) Powell and Jayme Johnson all of Bloomington, Justin (Nicole) Powell of Hilmar, CA, Danielle (Mingo) Mosson of Mackinaw, Anna Mercer of Urbana and Drew Mercer of Marion.; his verbal adopted grandchildren, Kolten Brucker, Kortney (Brucker) Bennett and Brian Kline; great-grandchildren, Taylor, Kaylyn and Layla Powell, Raelynn Juergens, Josie Mosson, Edyn Mercer, Cohen Johnson, and Kansas Powell. He also left behind his fur baby Daisy.
He was preceded in death by his twin sister, Lorene at 6 months; sisters, Violet Vance, Dorothy Kelly; brother, Robert and their spouses; his oldest son, Kurt; grandson, Aaron Mercer and infant great-granddaughter, Keira Kay Johnson.
Being a successful salesman, Loren won 13 trips to different Islands.
He loved going to rodeos, watching football, basketball, and Westerns.
He most loved watching the family playing in their sporting events. Loren never met a stranger and loved telling jokes. He was known to be a little onery.
He loved his family with all his heart and was so proud of them all. He will be missed by all who knew him.
