Melvin L. Zimmerman, 90, Fairbury died at 12:35 am Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at Fairview Haven Nursing Home, Fairbury.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Friday, February 4, 2011 at the Apostolic Christian Church, Fairbury with the ministers of the church officiating. Burial will be in the Fairbury Apostolic Christian Cemetery with military honors provided by the Fairbury VFW. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 pm Thursday at Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Fairbury and 9:00 to 9:45 am Friday at the church.
Mr. Zimmerman was born June 18, 1920 in Fairbury, the son of Christian Edward and Amelia Metz Zimmerman. He married Ardella M. Streitmatter on June 18, 1946 in Pontiac, IL. She preceded him in death on January 23, 2008.
Surviving is one son, Randall (Mary) Zimmerman, Forrest; three grandchildren, Kim (Mark) Haab, Fairbury, Kelli (Ryan) Coleman, Channahon, IL, Kara (Logan Spenard) Zimmerman, Fairbury; four great grandchildren, Connor and McKenna Haab, Chase and Maddox Coleman; one brother, Maurice (Joy) Zimmerman, Fairbury; four sisters, Mary Ellen Nylander and Arlene Walter, both of Fairbury, Alene (Bob) Perkins, Normal, and Donna Gadberry, Fairbury.
He is preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.
Mr. Zimmerman served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII (10/19/1942 – 2/19/1946). He later owned and operated Melvin Zimmerman Construction beginning in 1946 working until his retirement in 1986. He was a member of the Apostolic Christian Church, Fairbury and the Fairbury VFW post 9789.
The family suggest memorials be given to Fairview Haven Nursing Home or SELCAS, both in Fairbury.
