Fairbury – Mildred "Millie" Barnes, 92, of Fairbury, passed away at 2:06pm, October 29, 2013 at Evenglow Health Center, Pontiac.
Cremation has been accorded. A memorial will be held at 11:00am, Friday, November 1, 2013 at Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Fairbury. Pastor Spencer Homen will be officiating.
Friends may greet the family one hour prior to services on Friday also at the funeral home.
Burial will take place at a later date in Graceland Cemetery, Fairbury.
Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Fairbury or Evenglow Health Center, Pontiac.
Millie was born August 12, 1921 in Waldo Twp. the daughter of John and Mabel Bentley Rathbun.
She married Donald M. Barnes in Fairbury in 1939. On September 30, 2013, they celebrated 74 years of marriage. He survives in Pontiac.
They lived and worked in various places finally settling in Fairbury, where they remained until they moved to Evenglow Health Center in 2001.
Also surviving are two daughters; Bonnie (Jack) Hacker and Kathy (Bob) Coats; six grandchildren; Deb (Hacker) Morneau, David, Jeff and John Hacker and Bob and Don Coats, as well as 16 great grandchildren; and Bob Doran who spent his high school years as part of our family.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Eloise Schuler.
Millie was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Fairbury and Moose Lodge, Pontiac.
She graduated from Chenoa High School in 1939.
During her life Millie worked several different occupations including waitressing, bookkeeping and as a nurse's aide. In 1962, after attending Peoria School of Practical Nursing, she received her LPN license. She then worked at Fairbury Hospital in O.B. as well as on the regular floor and later worked at Fairview Haven Retirement Community. She then worked for 25 years at Addis Auto Parts in Fairbury.
Millie and Don had many common interests which included golf, fishing, card games, and traveling. She also enjoyed needlework and knitting. They spent many of their retirement winters in Texas enjoying new friends, golf and fresh seafood.
