Nelson Jay "Jim" Claudon Jr., 92, Fairbury, died at 9:10 pm Thursday, January 3, 2013 at Fairview Haven Retirement Community, Fairbury.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Monday, January 7, 2013 at Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Fairbury. Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Fairbury with full military rites conducted by the Fairbury VFW post #9789 and John Joda American Legion post 354. Visitation will be 3:00 to 6:00 pm Sunday and 9:30 – 10:15 am Monday at Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Fairbury. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be given to SELCAS building fund or Fairview Haven Retirement Community, both in Fairbury.
Mr. Claudon was born September 27, 1920, Chicago, Illinois the son of Nelson Jay and Marie Shule Claudon. He Married Margaret Rathbun on November 24, 1938 and celebrated their 71st anniversary before her death on February 27, 2010.
Survivors include his children: Barb (Leroy) Ward, Fairbury, Carol Bryant, Fairbury, Mary Lynn (Wally) Ross, Lewiston, MN; grandchildren: Kathy (Greg) Popejoy, Fairbury, Mike (Robyn) Ward, O'Fallon, IL, Melanie Ward, Bloomington, Niki Martin, Forrest, Eric Payne, Bloomington, Rob Hilligoss, Fairbury, Jackie (David) Eisenmann, Savoy, Paula (Mark) Bachtold, Fairbury; Great-grandchildren: Tyler and Abby Popejoy, LiliAna, Michael, Ally, and Avery Ward; Jayla Bryant, Jaxson, and Jerzee Martin; Austin Payne; Sydney, Cortney, and Mackenzie Eisenmann; Brooke, Grant, Faith, Jake Bachtold.
He is preceded in death by a twin sister Jean; a daughter, Patricia J. Claudon at the age of three; an infant grandson, James Albert Ward; an infant great-granddaughter, Morgan Elizabeth Ward; and his wife Margaret
Mr. Claudon spent his entire life in Fairbury. He showed horses with his sister Jean as a child and attended Fairbury schools.
He was employed by Hicksgas. He then served in WWII from June of 1944 to December 1945 in the South Pacific receiving the Bronze Battle Star. After the service he sold cars at Claudon Motor Mart, first with his father and then as owner for many years. After retirement from Claudon Motor Mart Jim worked as a courier for Advocate BroMenn.
He was a member of the American Legion for 67 years. He volunteered for SELCAS and in 1975 directed much of the investigative work in obtaining a new trauma-type ambulance for the then 2 ½ year old civic corporation. Jim enjoyed his coffee group at McDonald's restaurant before moving to Fairview Haven in April of 2011.
