Velda Marie Powell, 85, Chenoa, died at 5:45 pm Friday, May 18, 2012 at Meadows Mennonite Retirement Community, Chenoa where she had resided since 2006.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, May, 22, 2012 at the Chenoa Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dan Patterson officiating. Interment will be in Chenoa Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4:00 to 8:00 pm Monday, May 21, 2012 at Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Chenoa and 10:00 to 11:00am Tuesday at the church. The family suggests memorials be directed to the First Presbyterian Church, Chenoa; Meadows Mennonite Retirement Community Residents Fund, or to the charity of the donor's choice.
Mrs. Powell was born on October 21, 1926 in Pontiac, IL the daughter of Rudolph C. and Mary M. DeGroodt Westermeyer. She married George P. Powell on June 20, 1948 in Eppards Point Evangelical United Brethren Church, rural Pontiac, IL. He preceded her in death on December 14, 1977.
Surviving are her children, Thomas L. Powell, Macomb, IL, Jorj Ann (Tom) Higgins, Jane Ellen (Terry) Casson, both of Chenoa, five grandchildren, Brett (Angie) Powell, Elkville, IL, Curt (Jennifer) Casson, Lexington, IL, Kent (Rebecca) Casson, Fairbury, IL, Drew (Ashley Buck) Powell, Jennifer Powell, both of Macomb, IL, four great grandchildren, Ella Rose Casson, Chloe Jayne Casson, Madison Brooke Davis, Kasen Johnathan Casson, one sister, Marilyn (Leon) Kellar, Colfax, IL, one sister in law, Helen Powell, Tremont, IL, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Dolores Schultze and one brother, Rudolph T. "Bud" Westermeyer.
Mrs. Powell was a 1944 graduate of Pontiac Twp. High School and the University Beauty School, Bloomington, IL. She owned and operated Cut and Curl, Chenoa and later Powell's Beauty Shop in her home, Chenoa for 27 years until her retirement. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Chenoa and its women's circle. She also served as a deacon in her church and was a member of the Chenoa Women's Club and the Corn Bowl Hairdressers Association. She was a wonderful cook who enjoyed scrapbooking, photo albums and listening to her radio.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who enjoyed time spent with her family. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
