Viola Goembel, 97, of Fairbury, passed away at 12:26am April 29, 2011 at Fairview Haven Nursing Home, Fairbury.
Funeral will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, May 2, 2011 at Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Fairbury. Pastor Spencer Homan will be officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, Fairbury.
Visitation will be held from 4-6:00pm on Sunday, May 1, 2011 also at the funeral home and one hour prior to services on Monday.
Viola was born December 8, 1913 in Fairbury, the daughter of Jonathan and Gertrude Stortz Munz.
Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Fairbury or Fairview Haven Nursing Home, Fairbury.
She married Horace Goembel on November 6, 1937 in Rockville, IN. He died October 21, 1988.
Surviving are two sons, Jon Goembel and Rick (Sally) Goembel both of Fairbury and two daughters, Marsha Graham of Rialto, CA and Marilyn (Nicholas) Downey of Brooklyn, NY; grandchildren, Erika Vogt, Sheila and Michael Graham, and Justin and Keith Goembel; 7 great grandchildren.
Viola was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Julia Ann and one son-in-law Steve Graham.
Viola graduated from Illinois State University and began teaching at Brights Corner School. She then taught at Rudd School which was on the Forrest curve.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church where she was very active. She was also and active member of the Livingston County Home Extension.
Viola was a devoted homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and teacher. She loved her gardens, cooking and in her later years word searches.
