Walter Carl Poppe, 95, of Gibson City formerly of Colfax, passed away at 11:58 pm, Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at his residence in Gibson City.
Cremation rites have been accorded, and a memorial service will take place at 11 am, Monday, October 10, 2011 at the American Evangelical Lutheran Church, Gibson City, with Pastor Jim Davis officiating. Inurnment will follow in Wiley Cemetery, Colfax.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm, Sunday, October 9, 2011 at Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Colfax, and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.
Walter was born on January 25, 1916 in rural Colfax the son of John and Agnes (Hadawig) Poppe. He married Ermal E. Harmeson, on September 28, 1937 in Chenoa. She passed away on February 27, 2001.
Survivors include five children: Norman (Barbara) Poppe of LeRoy; Wayne (Pat) Poppe of Bloomington; Alice (Jim) Sieving of Benton, AR; Bryce (Sue) Poppe of Heyworth; Jim (Jane) Poppe of Arrowsmith; fourteen grandchildren, twenty two great grandchildren and one expected great-great granddaughter in February of 2012.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, one daughter, Madelyn Stauffer and three great grandchildren.
Mr. Poppe was a member of the American Evangelical Lutheran Church of Gibson City, and a lifetime farmer in the Colfax – Arrowsmith area. He loved spending time with family and friends and will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.
The family suggests that memorials be directed to the Carle Foundation Hospice, American Evangelical Lutheran Church of Gibson City or Gibson Area Hospital.
