Walter Dietrich Winterland, 87, Fairbury died at 11:47 am Friday, March 25, 2011 at OSF St. James-John Albrecht Medical Center, Pontiac.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Monday, March 28, 2011 at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Forrest with the Rev. Corrine Blissard officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, with full military rite conducted by J.A. Folwell American Legion Post #174, Forrest. Visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00 pm Sunday at Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Fairbury.
Mr. Winterland was born June 14, 1923 in Forrest Twp, Livingston County, IL the son of Dietrich John and Cornelia K. Simpsen Winterland. He married Esther H. Warsaw Donaldson on June 14, 1970 in Bloomington, IL. She preceded him in death on December 30, 2010.
Surviving is one sister, Iva Rose (Marvin) Willke, Anchor, IL, one step son, David (Eileen) Donaldson, Hanover Park, IL and two step granddaughters, five nieces and nephews, Marlene (Robert) Dewey, Gary (Pamela) Willke, Brenda (Randy) Tomic, Mike (Molly) Wieting and Rita Meredith.
Mr. Winterland is preceded in death by one brother, Ray and one sister, Anna Mae Wieting.
He was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Forrest. He entered the US Army infantry on September 29, 1943 during WWII. He was a recipient of two Battle Stars, Good Conduct medal, Victory medal, Bronze Star with Oak Leaf cluster, and also the Purple Heart. Walter was honorably discharged from the US Army on November 22, 1945. He was a lifetime member of the J.A. Folwell American Legion Post #174, VFW post #886 and DAV post of Normal, IL. In 2010 Walter flew aboard a special "Honor Flight" to Washington DC with other military men chosen for their courage and commitment during war time in service to our country. During that dedication ceremony Walter received a medallion that he cherished.
He farmed in the Fairbury area until his retirement in 1987. He also worked as a Pfister Hybrid corn dealer for 25 years.
The family suggests memorial donations be directed to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Forrest.
