Fairbury – Wayne Eugene Hish 86, of Fairbury, passed away May 17, 2009 at 3:05 p.m. at his home surrounded by his family.
Funeral will be at 10:00a.m. on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Fairbury.
Visitation will be held from 4-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at the funeral home and one hour prior to the services on Wednesday. Burial will be in Avoca Township Cemetery where military honors will be performed by the Fairbury VFW Post 9789
Mr. Hish was born December 4, 1922 in Independence, KS the son of Luther E. and Hatta Buchner Hish. He married Helen E. Steidinger on May 5, 1945 in Paris Island, SC. She died March 25, 1996.
Surviving are his children, Evan (Carolyn) Hish of Fairbury, Lonnie (Denise) Hish of Lakewood, CO, LuAnn (Paul) Sutter of Fairbury, and Gregory (Beth) Hish of Fairbury; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harold (Nelma) Hish of Versailles, MO and Donald (Velda) Hish of Bloomington. Special friend Mary Beckley. He was preceded in death by one brother Elvin Hish.
Mr. Hish worked for Honegger's Mill as a Panel Board Operator for 25 years he then worked for the State of Illinois Highway Department in Forrest, he owned and operated a Montgomery Wards Retail Store in Fairbury, and last worked as a road commissioner for Avoca Township. Also during this time he was a Deputy Sheriff for Livingston County at special events.
He is a veteran of the United States Marine Corp during WWII. While serving he was wounded twice and received the Purple Heart. He also was an instructor for West Point, Annapolis, MD.
He is a member of the Fairbury VFW Post 9789, John Joda American Legion Post #54, and the Odd Fellows.
Mr. Hish was an avid golfer in his younger days and loved hunting and carving decoys.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to OSF St. Joseph Hospice, the Illinois Riffle Association or the National Riffle Association.
