Wilma Mae Thomas Wharry Owens (Granny), of Colfax, IL, formerly of Zeigler & Crab Orchard, IL, was surrounded by family at the home of her daughter & son-in-law when she quietly left her feeble body behind and entered Heaven just before noon on Friday, August 8, 2014.
Wilma was born in Pittsburg, IL on June 27, 1929 to Walter & Eva (Cline) Thomas. She married Rev. Freeman Wharry on September 5, 1947. He preceded her in death on September 9, 1975. They had 2 children, a daughter, Darla (Ron) Bayles of Colfax, IL and a son Jack (Rebecca) Wharry of Zeigler, IL. Grandchildren are Carol (John) Phillips, Tanya Handkins, Sonja (Dave) Veldman, Jared (Stephanie) Wharry, & Justin (Kristina) Wharry. Great-grandchildren are Joshua, Jennifer, Jacob, Caleb, Kyra, Karagan, Kadance, Preston, Javan, and a baby girl due to arrive in November.
She married Raymond Owens in Zeigler, IL on November 22, 1978 and became step-mother to Dr. Raymond JR (Nancy) Owens & Suzanne Owens, all formerly of Zeigler, IL and step-grandmother to Rebecca (Christian) Ensley, Matthew (Elizabeth) Owens, Sarah (Robert) Pratte, and Rachel Owens. Great-grandchildren are Emma, Lily, Anne, Owen, Jaclyn, Rosalee, Isabel, Virginia, & Calvin. Both her husband Raymond and stepson Raymond, JR preceded her in death.
Her family was precious to her and she created many scrapbooks of pictures & mementos to chronicle their lives. She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed crocheting coats to match her outfits. Children touched her heart and rarely did she pass up the chance for a hug from any child that looked her way. Her church membership was at Zeigler Baptist Church but she loved visiting with extended family & friends at several churches. She leaves behind a legacy of singing gospel music that echoes down through her family.
Cremation rights have been accorded. Celebration services of her life will take place on Sunday, August 17, 2014 at Center Baptist Church, Crab Orchard, IL, visitation at 1:30 pm with the service to begin at 2 pm and on Sunday, August 24, 2014 at Union Church of Cooksville, Cooksville, IL, visitation at 1:30 pm with the service to begin at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made in her name to Hospice or a children's charity of your choice.
