Wilma Hendrix Slayton, 87, died at Meadows Mennonite Retirement Home Chenoa, Illinois at 6:00 p.m. March 24, 2009 after a brief illness.
Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 30th, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church in Fairbury with visitation one hour prior. Rev. Charles McDonald will be officiating. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery in Fairbury. There will also be a visitation from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 29th, 2009 at Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Fairbury.
Mrs. Slayton was born January 3, 1922 in Dolson Township, Clark County, near Marshall, Illinois, daughter of Owen J. and Ada M. Burkett Hendrix. She married Robert S. Slayton on October 16, 1943 in Carlinville, Blackburn College Chapel. He preceded her in death in 1989.
Surviving are their five children: Robert Sidney (Christina) Slayton II of Bowie, MD; Sidney Kathleen (Jerry) Huddleston of Fairbury, IL; Karen Joanne (Bob)Slayton Linder of Austin, TX; Deborah Lynne (Ralph) Slayton-Czerwinski of Decatur, IL; William Joseph (Victoria) Slayton of Fort Wayne, IN. She is also survived by two sisters and one brother: Virginia (Bill) Challis of Chatham, IL; Imogene Graff of Gibson City, IL; Wayne Hendrix of Marshall, IL. She is survived by 4 grandsons, 6 granddaughters, and 8 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a sister, Rosalee (Dean survives) Guyer of Robinson, IL; and cherished granddaughter, Rachel Linder.
Mrs. Slayton was a graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University (Class of 1943) where she earned a degree in secondary education and English. She became a part of the Fairbury community in 1955 when her husband, Bob, came to work for the Honegger Feed Company. She returned to school to earn her primary education certificate and began a long career in the Fairbury School District, primarily teaching at the third grade level. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the First United Methodist Church of Fairbury; the United Methodist Women; Shakespeare Club; Chautauqua Literary Society Circle; Delta Kappa Gamma; National Education Association; Illinois Wesleyan University Alumni Association.
